Wilkinson Charged with First-Degree Murder in Shooting Death of Cedar Rapids Man

An autopsy has confirmed that 47-year-old Gregory William O'Hare died of multiple gunshot wounds Friday.

The Linn County Sheriff's Department has charged Martin Paul Wilkinson, 63, of Central City, with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Cedar Rapids resident Gregory William O'Hare.

Autopsy reports showed that O'Hare's death on Friday morning was caused by multiple gunshot wounds, according to a Linn County Sheriff's Department news release today.

Law enforcement charged Wilkinson after he was released from Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, due to injuries authorities were sustained before his confrontation with police.

Wilkinson was also charged with possession of firearms by a felon.

Emergency responders found O'Hare , face down in the road, at around 8:39 a.m. Friday in an area known as Muckersville in Central City.

Sheriff's deputies later went to Wilkinson's Central City home, which was nearby. They tried to negotiate with Wilkinson, but when it became clear he was not coming out, they blocked off the perimeter, according to the Gazette.

People close to Wilkinson said they believed that there could have been "several" weapons in his home, and around 4 p.m. several popping noises were heard, according to the Gazette.

Officers used tear gas to get him out of his home, and then used a Taser to take him into custody, Linn County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. 

Wilkinson is in the Linn County Correctional Center.
