At about 6:21 p.m. on September 27, 2013 the West Bertram Fire Department, Area Ambulance, Linn County Rescue 57, and Linn County Deputies were dispatched to a two vehicle injury accident at the intersection of Hwy 13 and Mt Vernon Road.

Deputies arrived to find that a 2011 Toyota Van driven by Anand Darla, 42, of Des Moines was stopped for the traffic signal (steady red light) on Hwy 13 northbound, when struck in the rear by a 2013 Chevy Spark driven by Jayden Barrett, 19, of Cedar Rapids. Barrett and a 10-year-old male child from the Darla vehicle were transported to Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids by Area Ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries.  Barrett was cited for Failure to Stop within the Assured Clear Distance.  All occupants were wearing their safety belts.
