Musical “Prodigal” Makes World Premier on Marion High School stage

Local high school director makes debut as librettist and story writer

Marion High School Media Release

In November, over 60 Marion High School (MHS) students will present the world premier of locally-written and composed musical, “Prodigal,” in the Marion High School Auditorium. Performances will be presented November 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, and 9th at 7 p.m.

“Prodigal” is the original work by MHS choir director, Jonathan Dyrland. The plot is based on the story of the prodigal son. Jake (the prodigal son) and his friends Peter, Davey and Tommy work on Jake's father's farm.  They love working there and have a close friendship.  Each have a main love interest; Debbie, Rachel, Leah and Sarah who also work on the farm.  The farm workers enjoy a comfortable life and a close-knit community until one day, two strangers show up.  Ms. Lucy Abaddon, heir to the Apollyon Casino & Resort in beautiful Las Vegas arrives with her personal assistant, Ms. Amy.  Their car has broken down and they need assistance.  Jake is quickly volunteered to repair the car and during the process, Ms. Amy convinces Jake that his Papa is squandering his inheritance by being too generous to the farmhands.  During a conversation between Ms. Lucy and Ms. Amy, we learn that their motives for Jake and his friends are much more sinister than they appear.  After the car is fixed, everyone attends an Ice Cream Social being put on by Jake's Papa.  Jake panics after witnessing his Papa's continued generosity and in a moment of anger, demands to receive his share of the inheritance.  Papa agrees and after giving Jake a check, Jake, Peter, Davey and Tommy catch a ride with Ms. Lucy and Ms. Amy to the Apollyon Casino & Resort.  Once they arrive, Jake begins gambling with his inheritance.  Ms. Lucy shelters Jake and the boys after learning that Debbie and her three friends have arrived at the casino in an effort to bring the boys back. Featured musical numbers in the show include: "It's Gonna Be A Great Day," "What I Really Want," "Welcome To The Apollyon," "Love Takes Time," "It's All Coming Together," "It's Not Just A Social," and "Home."
