For some us who sit at the computer day in and day out, neck and shoulder pain can be very common. Naturally, our body will tend to move the head toward the computer screen, or towards our paperwork. Our posture tends to suffer with the repetitiveness and strain, and the neck muscles are forced to work harder than they should.
This does not even factor into account the repetitious movements of doing various tasks that accompanies most “desk” jobs. These repetitive movements are the primary cause of cumulative trauma disorders (CMD), or overuse injuries. Neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, and shoulder “impingement,” are just some of the many disorders that can develop from office work, and they all can be classified in the category of overuse.
The good thing is, there are plenty of things that you can do to avoid overuse injuries to the neck and shoulder. Proper work ergonomics, frequent breaks, and sufficient exercise can help to reduce strain and prevent pain and injury.

If you currently have pain, or pain develops, chiropractic and some forms of massage therapy have been shown to be scientifically proven through many different studies. Ice is a good home remedy, but please make sure to place a barrier between your skin and the ice to avoid frostbite.
In our office we are certified to treat both misalignment of the spine that can cause impinged nerves, and adhesion, which is a result of overuse to soft tissues, like muscles (Please see my blog post on Adhesion for more information).
