Obituary: Betty Rice

Betty Jane (Hazewinkel) Rice, 88, of Marion, passed away on Jan. 19 at Mercy Medical Center.

Betty was born March 31, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Henry J. and Marie S. (Kray) Hazewinkel. She graduated from Dubuque Sr. High School in 1943. Betty was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served as a WAVE during WWII from 1945 to 1946. She married Norman B. Rice on November 19, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. Norman died in 1998. Betty was a member of the American Legion Post #294 of Marion, NARFE, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion.

Betty enjoyed knitting and making baby quilts. She took the LIFTS bus to the Rockwell Collins Rec Center three times a week. Betty was a devoted mother and grandmother who was proud to have lived independently for so many years in the house that her father and husband had built.
