Parents Of 5-Year-Old Found In Indian Creek Urge Water Safety Discussions With Kids

Release of information of death of 5 year old from Cedar Rapids Police:

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – June 3, 2013 – On May 31, 2013, Cedar Rapids Police responded to a missing 5 year old in the 300 block of 30 St Dr SE. A search of the immediate area was conducted by numerous people and he was located in the Indian Creek. The 5 year old boy was given CRP by police and he was taken to a local hospital. The 5 year old did die. No foul play is suspected.

The 5 year old has special needs (Autistic) and has a love for the water. He found his way out of a normally locked door and returned to the area of the creek that he loved to play at. However, he had always been supervised on any other visits. He slipped in the muddy banks and fell into the water where he was swept away and drowned.

The family wants to encourage parents of all children to take this tragic incident and to speak to their children about water safety. Water safety applies to all bodies of waters, including creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, oceans and pools. And the family wants the public to remember to hug your child.
