Police: 63-Year-Old Takes Officers On 3-County Chase

From Cedar Rapids Police:

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – June 29, 2013– The Cedar Rapids Police Department pursued a vehicle with stolen registration plates through Linn, Benton and Iowa counties; the incident ended about 2 miles west of Marengo on Highway 6 with one suspect in custody.

The plates belong to a Cedar Rapids resident and were reported stolen on June 20, 2013.

On Saturday morning at about 8:30 AM, an officer was patrolling in the area of Westdale Court apartments; he observed the stolen plates and recognized that they did not match the automobile he was following. The officer in a fully marked police squad car attempted to make a traffic stop on a Gold 1995 Dodge Intrepid driven by an unknown adult male subject.

The pursuit of the Intrepid headed towards the city limits on Williams Blvd. SW (Highway 151) and continued south bound passing through the towns of Fairfax, Walford, the Amanas, Homestead and then westbound onto Highway 6. The majority of the pursuit was at speeds lower than the posted limits until the Intrepid accelerated to approximately 75-80 MPH around the junction of Highways 6 and 151.

On the east side of Marengo, a deputy was able to successfully deploy “stop sticks” which led to the end of the pursuit about 2 miles west of town along Highway 6. Officers from the CRPD, the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office were able to arrest Steven Cooley, 63, at-large, on a warrant for revocation of parole - Burglary, attempting to elude, driving while license suspended, and other traffic charges.
