Recent University of Iowa Grads Generously Donate New Technology to University's THINC Lab
University of Iowa's THINC lab receives a hefty upgrade in new energy efficient LED lighting technology from recent graduates.
University of Iowa grads, Martin Zhang and Kyle Drumhiller, wanted to show appreciation of their former stomping grounds by donating $8,000 worth of new technology to the THINC Lab in the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. The former students attended the University’s Henry B. Tippie College of Business, which is what helped shape them into the successful business men they are today.
Zhang and Drumhiller graduated from the University of Iowa in 2012, and then founded the Kansas City-based startup, LED2 Lighting in July 2013. Zhang and Drumhiller are doing their former school proud as their company continues to grow exponentially.
Zhang, founder and CEO of LED2 Lighting, said that they “were excited to give back” to their school this way. He also noted that these “LEDs will have significant reduction in energy cost and maintenance for the lab for the next five to 10 years.” The university will save up to $1,300 per year with the new addition to the THINC lab.

The beauty of THINC, The Innovation and Collaboration Lab, is that it is not just for students to use to think creatively, collaborate, consult, and meet with business partners, it is also used for community meetings.
The new technology has “improved the whole feel of the Lab,” said Lynn Allendorf, Director of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. She adds that the “space is brighter, more welcoming, and much more functional now. We’re proud to display the good work of our graduates.”
