"That’s when we realized there were clues that led us to a residence and perhaps the suspect," Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner told the Gazette.

Sheriff's deputies later went to the home of the suspect, 63-year-old Martin Paul Wilkinson, of 2567 Windy Hill Circle in Central City, according to a statement released late Friday. They tried to negotiate with Wilkinson, but when it became clear he was not coming out, they blocked off the perimeter, according to the Gazette.

People close to Wilkinson said they believed that there could have been "several" weapons in his home, and around 4 p.m. several popping noises were heard, according to the Gazette.

Officers used tear gas to get him out of his home, and then used a Taser to take him into custody, the statement said.

Wilkenson’s was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, which the Sheriff's Department said is common procedure when a Taser and tear gas are used.

Gardner said in today's statement that Wilkinson remains hospitalized for treatment of injuries that appeared to have been sustained prior to his standoff with law enforcement officers.

Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
