(Video) This Week's Update for Marion's Central Corridor Project

The City of Marion and Anderson Bogart have provided a progress update to the massive construction that's set to give Marion's downtown a huge facelift.

The construction continues in Marion's uptown area. You can already see the improvements taking place with new sidewalks and brick laying on Sixth Avenue on the corner of the .

But exactly how far along are we? 

Luckily, the City of Marion and Anderson Bogart, an engineering firm behind much of the project, have released an update for this week's construction, in addition to a video charting the project's progress, which you can see above.

They've provided the following update:

  • 10th Street Set to Open Monday: A significant project milestone will be reached this week with the opening of the 10th Street intersection. Over the past week, crews from LL Pelling installed an asphalt overlay that ties the new street improvements to the existing surface on 10th Street.

  • The infiltration beds in this area were completed and backfilling is now underway. 

  • Sidewalks along the west side of 10th Street are finished. Brick installation is also complete in this area. 

  • Traffic signal poles will be installed over the next several days, but the intersection will initially open with stop signs in place. Please be advised that construction will continue adjacent to the intersection. Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling on 10th Street. 

  • Work continued on the limestone wall and new park stairs this week. The stairs located in the southwest corner of the park are now complete (SEE PICTURE). The southeast stairs have been poured, and the final concrete will be installed in the center stairs over the next week. Handrails will soon be in place as well. 

  • Restoration of the limestone wall continues on the east end (SEE PICTURE OF COMPLETED SECTION). 

  • On Wednesday, City Wide Construction poured the north curb between 10th & 11th Street. Crews with Curtis Contracting also poured the south sidewalk this week in the same block. Storm sewer, sub drain, and subgrade preparation is now complete in 1100 block. 

  • Additional sidewalk paving is also anticipated this week adjacent to the Marion Library parking lot. Once the 10th Street intersection is open, Rathje Construction will be allowed to close the 12th Street intersection. 

  • Pavement removal at 12th Street is anticipated to begin next week.   

  • Work is now occurring in Stages 1-4. Contractors have used approximately 56 of the allowed 100 working days.
