Buy a Poppy, Buy A Brick While Shopping This Weekend

Veterans of Foreign Wars will be distributing paper poppies, a symbol of remembrance of injured soldiers, at Hy-Vee, Dahls, Fareway and Sam's Club stores in the Urbandale area on Saturday.

Members of area VFW Halls will be distributing paper poppies in exchange for contributions to help disabled veterans at Urbandale Hy-Vee and Fareway stores as well as at nearby Dahls and Sam's Club store on Saturday.

The bright, red paper poppies are made by hospitalized veterans and are distributed in exchange for contributions to help disabled and hospitalized veterans.

The story of the poppy dates back to World War 1 when the bright red flower bloomed across the war-ravaged fields of Flanders.

Bill Lawson, a community volunteer, said the volunteers distributing the poppies also will have information and application forms for people who would like to buy a memorial paving brick in the to be built this summer.
