Child Saved by Helmet in Urbandale

Urbandale police issued this press release today.

On October 8, 2011, just before 5 p. m. the Urbandale Police and Fire Departments were called to an accident scene in the 4400 block of 160th Circle involving children being struck by a vehicle.

When Officers and Medics arrived they discovered a two-year-old child had gained entry to a parked vehicle in the driveway.  This vehicle was still in gear and rolled down the driveway, striking a 4- and 7-year old. The 4-year-old was on a bicycle and was wearing a bike helmet that is credited with saving his life.

Investigators determined a vehicle tire had run over the child’s helmet.  The 7- -year-old was also struck by the vehicle and went under the vehicle.The 4- and 7- -year-olds were both transported to local hospitals with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The Urbandale Police Department would like to remind parents to never leave their vehicle accessible when children are playing nearby and the importance of bicycle helmets.
