December Holiday Happenings In Urbandale

Luminarias, movies and more will put you in the holiday spirit; here's what's scheduled around Urbandale.

Urbandale holiday events for December:

The Urbandale Community Action Network resurrected the tradition of luminarias throughout the community in 2016 for the city's centennial celebration and the tradition will continue this year. Residents can purchase luminaria kits to light their homes from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. Proceeds will benefit children and families in need this holiday season. The kits contain 20 bags and candles and you can buy the kits online by 1 p.m. Friday via the UCAN website or call 515-278-3936 or go online. Residents will light the luminarias at dusk.

Here are some other holiday-related events taking place this month in Urbandale:

Friday Flicks, 1 p.m. each week at the Urbandale Public Library, 3520 86th St.

  • Dec. 8, "Christmas in Connecticut." 1945. A magazine columnist totally devoid of the homemaking skills espoused in her column needs some fast, as her boss has invited himself and a recently returned war hero for her home for Christmas.
  • Dec. 15, "White Christmas," 1954. The classic musical about two guys that become a popular song-and-dance team and play at a resort for charity.
  • Dec. 22, "Babes in Toyland," 1961. Santa Claus’ incompetent assistants accidentally make some giant wooden soldiers, which come in useful when a villain tries to take over Toyland.
  • Dec. 29, "It’s a Wonderful Life," 1946. George Bailey, a desperate and suicidal man, is visited by a guardian angel who shows him how important he has been to those around him in his life.

"Snowball fight," 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 9 at Urbandale Swimming Pool, 7201 Aurora Ave. The cost is $4 per person over age 2. Call 515-278-3959.

Santa at the library, 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 14 and 10 to 11 a.m. Dec. 15. Meet Santa and participate in crafts, carols and a short scavenger hunt.

Monthly Movie Night for Adults, 6 p.m. Dec. 21, Urbandale Public Library."Holiday Affair," 1949. Starring Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh, this film follows a young widow who is romanced by a sales clerk whom she inadvertently got fired.

Snow Ball dance, 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 28, Urbandale Public Library, 3520 86th St. — Come dressed in your best for a winter dance party, for youths up to age 11 and their families. DJ, balloons, bubbles and an indoor "snowball" fight to end the night. Register online or call 515-278-3945.
