Dos and Don'ts on Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

Your guide, regardless of whether you have the day off or not.

  • Do put your garbage bins out Sunday night if your trash day is Monday. The regular pickup schedule will be followed. (And it's a recycling day, too.)
  • Don't wait for the mail. Monday is a postal holiday. The in Urbandale will be closed. 
  • Do plan to ride the bus if that's how you get to work. The buses will be running on a normal schedule.
  • Don't try to renew your driver's license. Driver license stations are closed because Monday is a state and federal holiday.
  • Do call your bank to see if it is open before driving there. About half of Iowa banks will be closed for the holiday, according to a survey by the Iowa Bankers Association.
  • Don't wake your kids up. If they go to Urbandale schools, they have the day off!
  • Do bring canned and boxed food, personal care items, or knitted hats, scarves or mittens to the to pay off your library fines. Bring the items between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. for National Day of Service and they will be donated to the
  • Do consider doing something fun with your kids. Theaters have several kid-friendly films. 
  • Do think about teaching your kids about service by taking them to the kid-friendly activities in honor of the civil rights leader at the Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center.
