Why Go:  Parents and their children under age 10 can join the quest for hidden candy canes! Hot cider, cocoa and a photo opportunity with Santa are included. . Don’t forget: flashlight, bag and camera! The registration deadline was Dec. 2, but call the Parks and Recreation Department at 278-3963 to see if there is still room.

2. CELEBRATE HUMAN RIGHTS
Where/When:Â Iowa State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust St., Des Moines, Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Why Go:Â Entertainment celebrating different cultures and topical discussions and programs on marriage equality, racial profiling, English language discrimination, immigration and Occupy Des Moines. The Urbandale Human Rights Commission is a sponsor.

3. SNEAK PRVIEW OF WINTER REC GUIDE
Where/When: This website, Saturday
Why Go: Registration doesn't open until later this month, but the Parks and Recreation Department will have its Winter Guide online for brousing beginning Saturday.

4. WELLMARK RATE HIKE PUBLIC HEARING.
Where/When: Urbandale Public Library, Saturday, 10:30 a.m.
Why go: Wellmark is proposing a rate increase of 9.4 percent next year for people who buy insurance on their own rather than through their employer. This public hearing gives customers a chance to comment on that increase. Plus Occupy Des Moines will be protesting out front so there will be spectacle.

5. KICKOFF LIBRARY'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Where/When: , 3250 86th St., Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.Â
Why Go:Â The library will celebrate the year of its opening - 1961 - with a showing of West Side Story, a popular movie that year, librarians dressed in 1961-era clothing, and Story Time with Santa.
