Got An Extra Fan? Donate It! They Are Needed in Urbandale

Weather forecasters are predicting a heat wave through the July 4th holiday. People without air conditioning should ask for help.

The is collecting working fans to give to clients who do not have air conditioning.

The Polk County Emergency Management Agency is warning that high temperatures and dangerous heat indexes will continue through the July 4 holiday

Pantry Director Eileen Boggess said one of their clients called her today looking for a donated fan. When Boggess called around, she found that unlike Des Moines, there are no programs to distribute fans to people without air conditioning in Urbandale and Windsor Heights.

Anyone is interested in donating a fan this summer, can drop it off at the Urbandale Food Pantry, during its hours of operation: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Pantry volunteers will distribute them to clients without air conditioning.

A.J. Mumm with the emergency management agency said that a full-time cooling shelter at 1548 Hull Avenue in Des Moines will open at 7:00 pm tonight and is anticipated to be open until 8:00 am on Monday, July 2.

Also, the Animal Rescue League has been contacted to provide a cool location for the pets of people who need to use the shelter.
