Hurting the Ones You Love -- And a Couple You Don't

Five Urbandale residents were arrested earlier this month for assault. Was it the full moon?

The Urbandale arrests below are preliminary criminal charges. They do not represent convictions or court resolutions. 

Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was the holiday. Maybe it was the full moon, but Urbandale had a rash of assault cases the first week in July.

Here are several that resulted in charges:

July 5: A 50-year-old Polk City woman staying at Motel Relax told police she was assaulted by her 32-year-old boyfriend from Des Moines. The woman said her boyfriend physically assaulted her and then stabbed her with a pair of scissors, although officers did not see any stab wounds, said Lt. Rob Johansen.
Jimmy Schoolfield was arrested on July 10 and charged with aggravated assault in the case. Schoolfield is in the Polk County Jail on a $2,000 cash-only bond and a probation violation.

July 5: Eric W. Reeves, 27, and his 21-year-old girlfriend were watching the Urbandale fireworks display in a parking lot in the 3600 block of 86th Street. Reeves was texting someone on his cellphone and his girlfriend wanted to see who and what he was texting, said Lt. Rob Johansen. He refused and the couple began to fight. The girlfriend said she was physically assaulted and the assault continued when the couple went home. She called police. Reeves was charged with domestic assault with injury.

July 7: Ricky Beaman, 54, of Urbandale, was upset at a car that drove through the parking lot at Villa Lodge where he lives, which was going faster than he thought it should. Beaman began arguing with the couple in the car -- Adam Smith and Macey Carlson. There was some chest bumping between the two men and Beaman allegedly grabbed Smith's shirt, according to the police report. Carlson then allegedly threw a plastic hanger at Beaman. Beaman and Carlson, 27, both were charged with simple assault.

July 8: Melissa A. Sapp, 24, of Urbandale was charged with domestic assault with injury. Sapp is accused of assaulting her partner and the father of her children at their home. Police reports say that she allegedly grabbed him by the face and then hit him in the face with a closed fist. The 27-year-old man had a cut on his cheek, minor swelling on his upper lip and a cut inside his lip.
