Nine people will start learning about the Urbandale Fire Department next Thursday night as an eight-week Citizen Academy begins.

The program's goal is to enhance relationships between Urbandale residents and Urbandale Fire Department said Fire Marshall Jon Rech. This program is designed to give a clearer understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the fire department in the community.

The nine citizens applied to be in the program and will take a four-hour class one evening a week. They will learn about fire safety and prevention, emergency medical services, rescue and will actually get to train with a fire in the department's fire training building.
