ENCORE: Multiple Callers I.D. Man in Urbandale Child Sex Case
Police arrested Mark Barber less than a week after Urbandale authorities released a hotel surveillance video image of an unidentified man suspected in a case of sexually-suggestive photography of a child.

The Des Moines man identified from an Urbandale hotel surveillance videotape is being held in the Polk County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond, while police investigate how many children may have been involved in sexually suggestive photographs.
Right now, will say only that they filed a felony charge of inappropriate contact with a child against 43-year-old Mark Allen Barber based on allegations that he photographed a girl under the age of 10 in a sexually suggestive way.
Jeff Casey, police information officer, said Urbandale police originally were contacted by the child's parents. Last week, police said there may have been inappropriate contact between a man and the girl in the game arcade of the Ramada Inn on March 10.

Casey said he could not comment about where the pictures may have been taken, although he did say that it is not illegal to take photos of children in public places. He said investigators are checking to see whether other children were involved.
Casey said the videotape images of a large man in a green shirt walking through the hotel library were an initial stumbling block in the investigation.

"The big slowdown in the case was trying to get the surveillance video enhanced enough so that we could get a good blowup to distribute to the media. That probably took two weeks," he said.
Randy Peterson, who is Urbandale's liaison with the CrimeStoppers hotline, said after the photo was distributed last Thursday, several people called the hotline identifying Barber.
And Urbandale Detective Chad Underwood received a call from someone who not only identified the man as Barber, but also provided "quite a bit of solid information" said Peterson.
"I've been doing this for a couple years and I haven't had anything like this where we get multiple sources identifying someone" out of a public appeal such as this, said Peterson.
He credited Underwood for having the patience to wait until the video image could be enhanced enough to show recognizeable facial features.
"We want to build these relationships with the public so when we need the public's help, they are will to get involved," said Peterson.
