Teen Reportedly Defaces Landmark Urbandale Bandshell, Then Makes Amends

A 14-year-old Urbandale High School student allegedly wrote graffiti on the Lions Park bandshell last month with a magic marker and was charged with vandalism by .

The girl, who was not identified because she is a juvenile, has taken responsbility for her actions, said Jan Herke, director.

Herke said the girl's family contacted her and they hired a painter who removed the permanent marker words or painted over them.

Herke said it wasn't the first time someone wrote on the band shell, which is the site of summer band concerts, most notably during the city's July 4 celebration.

The painter also removed or painted over previous graffiti. Herke said there was no cost to the city.
