Urbandale Library Coffee Shop Gets Reprieve

Chapters remains open while the Urbandale Library Board reconsiders how to deal with the situation of unpaid rent.

Chapters, the coffee shop in the Urbandale Library, remains open after the city's Library Board reconsidered a November decision to terminate its contract with the business.

At its November meeting, the Library Board voted unanimously to send a 10-day notice to Mustards Restaurant, which operates the coffee shop. The notice would have asked Mustards to pay its back rent or the library would revoke its contract.

Library Director Julie Wells said the board reconsidered that decision and will discuss the matter at its Jan. 23 meeting. Chapters had not paid its monthly rent of $500 to the library since November of 2010.

Wells said the library still hasn't received rent payments.

Mustards is the third business to try to operate a coffee shop in the library. Previous operators have said they couldn't make enough profit from the shop.
