Urbandale Police Investigating Child's Death in Day-Care Home

The 13-month-old girl reportedly did not wake up from a nap Friday afternoon.

Police are investigating the death of a 13-month-old girl who died Friday afternoon while in the care of an Urbandale child-care home.

Police were summoned to a home in the 4500 block of 83rd Street at 4:17 p.m. by a report about a toddler not breathing, said Urbandale Police Information Officer Randy Peterson.

When officers arrived, the child was deceased, he said. The Polk County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy on the girl, he said.

Peterson said police are not releasing the girl's name until all family members can be notified. He said the family is from Urbandale.

He said he does not know if the child-care provider is licensed and registered with the state.

The care provider was there when police arrived, and Peterson said the girl's father had arrived to pick her up about that time, as well.

Peterson said Urbandale police last investigated a child death at a day-care center in 2007.
