Urbandale's New 'Sport+Spine' Chiropractors Focus On Joints+Muscles

Two young chiropractors are hoping to serve the growing west side of Urbandale.

Urbandale's newest chiropractors are strength and conditioning experts and hope to cater to those who want to get fit or stay fit.

"We're interested in serving people who are passionate about working out, passionate about being in shape. Somebody who's doing a class to lose or get in shape, but has had an injury," said Dr. Jon Roed of

Roed and Dr. Brooks Newton just opened their first chiropractic practice in northwest Urbandale. The two men are graduates of Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, MN.

Roed said he and Newton both are trained in strength and conditioning and both interned in sports injury clinics. Their office emphasizes the importance of functional movement and soft-tissue quality.

"The way we practice lends itself to sports injuries," said Roed, but the pair also expect to have a traditional practice.

Roed said that in addition to chiropractic adjustments to restore joint mobility and joint function, they are trained to offer help for muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, through cross-friction massage, an active release technique for muscles and stretching and strength exercises.

"A chiropractic adjustment is a great tool, but if you're getting adjusted once a week and you're not addressing the soft tissue," you may not be solving the problem, he said.

Roed and his wife, Katie, both went to the University of Iowa and she, especially, wanted to move back to Iowa.

"If you're from Iowa and you want to be in Iowa and you want to be in a place that's growing, this is kind of the place to be," he said of Des Moines western suburbs.
