What's New With Urbandale's July 4 Celebration?

A car show will be added to the city's annual three-day Independence Day extravaganza.

Urbandale's annual three-day Fourth of July celebration will have a new event -- a car show with vintage, racing, and sports cars.

Don Harrington, owner of Cottman Transmission, 6800 Hickman Road, told the Fourth of July planning committee this month that even in its first year, the car show could attract about 100 cars.

The car show would be from about 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, in the parking lot in front of the l.

"It will be quite the eye candy for anybody with an interest in sports cars, antique cars and cars in general," Harrington said in an interview.

Harrington, who is active in several car clubs and has been showing and racing cars for almost 25 years, expects that there will be between $2 million and $3 million in cars at the show.

"It's not unusual to see a car with $75,000 to $100,000 work into it," he said.

"What you'll see different with our car show, you'll see antique cars, but you'll actually see late-model cars and we'll actually have a couple of sports cars from car dealerships. It'll be quite a variety," Harrington.

He expects the car show will be free.
