UPDATE: What's Open on Presidents' Day in Urbandale?

UPDATE: What to do on Presidents Day:

• Sears in the Merle Hay Mall is having a big Presidents Day Sale -- 30 to 50 percent off on appliances, mattresses, tools and spring fashion.

• Homemakers Furniture is having a similar sale.

• Take your kids to the Winter Carnival at the Urbandale Pool from 1-4 p.m. today and 7 to 8 p.m. tonight.

• Take them to see the 3D version of Star Wars: Episode 1 - the Phantom Menace at the Cobblestone Theaters.

• Incredible Pizza is a good option for preteens.

What's Open; What's Closed

Presidents' Day is a federal holiday, but not all government offices are closed on Monday.  Here's a rundown of what's open and what's closed.

Schools:  Urbandale, Johnston and Des Moines schools are closed for teacher training days. Waukee, West Des Moines and Des Moines Christian have a normal school day.

The Urbandale School Board will have its regularly scheduled meeting in the Urbandale City Council chambers at 7 p.m. There will be a board work session at 5:30 p.m.

City government: Urbandale city offices will be open. Garbage pickup will be on a regular schedule.

Library: The Urbandale Library will be closed.

Postal service: Post offices will be closed and no mail will be sent or delivered Monday.

Bus service: DART buses will be running on a regular schedule.

State government: The IowaWORK Centers are closed.

County government: Polk County government offices will be closed.
