Why You Should Stay Cool Today
If you don't have air conditioning in your home, get yourself to the Urbandale Library, a mall or other air-conditioned spot this afternoon, health officials recommend.

Today's temperature could reach the low 90s, according to weather forecasters, but people without air conditioning should not underestimate the danger that might pose.
“Each summer it takes our bodies awhile to get readjusted to the heat," said Terri Henkels, director of the Polk County Health Department. "While we are likely to see much warmer temperatures later this summer, this week’s weather, without taking proper precautions, could pose a health risk.”
People most at risk are:

Polk County Health Department officials urge people who don't have air conditioning to cool down for a few hours by going to one of the public locations that are listed as cooling stations.
In Urbandale and Johnston, that's the public libraries. The is open until 9 p.m. through Thursday. The Johnston Library is open until 8 p.m. through Thursday. Indoor shopping malls are another good option.

In Urbandale, DART's #73 bus may get you close to the library but it will only run from about 3:45 p.m. to 6:30 today, so read the schedule closely.
Two hours in air conditioning can significantly reduce the risk of health problems, said Henkels.
Other tips from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control on how to stay healthy despite the heat include:
- Drink 16 to 20 ounces of water 2 hours before going out into the heat. Keep water within arm’s reach and sip 8-10 ounces of water every 15-20 minutes. Do not wait until you are thirsty. If you are thirsty you are already dehydrated.
- Avoid sugary drinks or alcoholic drinks. These actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.
- Taking a cool shower or bath is a better way of cooling off than relying on electric fans. If the temperature reaches the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Check on adults who have no respite from the heat at least twice a day. Children need more frequent monitoring.
