Iowa State University Extension and Outreach of Dallas County in partnership with the Waukee YMCA is ready for the return of Babysitting Basics. A week long day camp will be offered for 5th grade youth and older that is designed to teach essential child care skills. This training will be offered Monday June 16 through Friday June 20 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 900 Warrior Lane, Waukee.
“The number one thing we provide in Babysitting Basics,” said Lisa Mickelson, Extension Educator, “is to prepare youth with how to handle situations that may arise while they are providing care for infants and young children. We give them the skills and knowledge necessary to ensure they are the best babysitter they can be.”
Babysitting Basics will address first aid, safety, essential information to gather from families, nutrition and age-appropriate toys and activities. Campers will create their own babysitter bag of tricks along with planning and providing a fun-filled morning for a group of preschool-aged children. Guest speakers include Dallas County EMTs to cover compression-only CPR training and first aid, and a local youth who will share what’s in her bag of “babysitting tricks.”
“Being prepared, obtaining the proper information from parents and gaining knowledge on the topics we discuss will help make the experience a positive one for the sitter, the children and the parents,” expressed Mickelson.
Cost for the five-day event is $70 for YMCA members and $110 for non-members.
