The 2021 National Library Week is being celebrated April 4-10. This year's theme is “Welcome to Your Library”. This holiday is a reminder that libraries extend far beyond the walls of a building and that everyone is welcome to use library services. During the pandemic, libraries nationwide and here in Waukee went above and beyond to adapt to our changing world by expanding resources and continuing to meet the needs of users. Whether people visit in-person or virtually, libraries offer opportunities for everyone to explore new worlds and become their best selves through access to technology, multimedia content and educational programs.

Even with closed doors in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Waukee Public Library completed 5,500 curbside pick-ups and checked out 64,000 books. Staff took to online methods to share storytimes, craft projects, educational programs and more, and a new mobile app helped with seamless library transactions. Virtual resources such as Digital Scholar, Bookflix, Flipster and many more kept users engaged. Library Express is now serving in-person visitors on weekdays from 12-6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Waukee Public Library is the only library located within the entire Waukee Community School District boundaries. Library staff are planning a strong comeback when things open up for good later in 2021, proving time and time again that public libraries are a vital part of a thriving community.
