City Council Approves Water Purchase for Waukee

At a city council meeting July 16, members of the Waukee City Council approved a water capacity purchase meant to keep residents from experiencing a sharp increase in their bills.

Thanks to a recent purchase by the city of Waukee, residents won't have to worry about a drastic increase in their water bills.

At the July 16 meeting of the , council members gave their approval for a 20-year loan for the purchase of a 1 million gallon water capacity from the city of Pleasant Hill. The purchase price was $2.8 million.

The city currently purchases water from the Des Moines Water Works. With its population on the rise and a daily capacity of 2.65 million gallons, city officials were worried Waukee might eventually exceed its daily limits. The purchase should be enough to serve the population of Waukee for the next 13-15 years without a sharp increase in water rates.

Still, Waukee officials say, residents can expect to see a standard 3 percent increase in the cost of water over the next three years.
