  • Consignment shops usually buy seasonal clothing, so think shorts and tank tops in the spring, and coats and pants in the fall.
  • If the clothing is very outdated, it usually won't sell unless you're selling to a vintage store.
  • If any clothing has missing buttons or threads sticking out, fix it before you go to the store.
  • Wash the clothes and have them smelling and looking their best.

Salvation Army

Address and hours: The nonprofit has three stores in Des Moines and one in Ankeny. All are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday; find locations on this link.
Sells: Secondhand donated clothes and household goods
Pickup: The nonprofit has a truck that can be scheduled to collect donations, including furniture. For pick-up of a donation call 1-800-SA-TRUCK.
