Parents Talk: Are Breastfeeding Photos Too Much for Facebook?

A popular blogger was suspended from Facebook after she posted a photo of her 18-month-old daughter breastfeeding. Was the suspension fair?

Is a photo of a mother breastfeeding her child offensive? Facebook thinks so.

A popular blogger at TheFeministBreeder.com, was suspended from the social media site two weeks ago for posting a picture of her 18-month-old daughter nursing while innocently snagging a piece of bacon from her breakfast plate.

The photo, a close up of her daughter next to her breast, did not show a nipple or a fully-exposed breast and therefore did not violate Facebook's terms of use.

A representative for Facebook told The Huffington Post, "We agree that breastfeeding is natural and we are very glad to know that it is important for mothers, including the many mothers who work at Facebook, to share their experience with others on the site. The vast majority of breastfeeding photos are compliant with our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and Facebook takes no action on such content. However, photos which contain a fully exposed breast, do violate our terms and may be removed if they are reported to us."

Since the offense, the blogger, Gina Crosley-Corcoran, has rallied other nursing mothers by asking them to post photos of themselves while breastfeeding on The Feminist Breeder Facebook page. To date, she still remains banned from Facebook.
