The Village at Legacy Pointe Retirement Community of Waukee Embarks on White Pole Road Tour

Residents of The Village at Legacy Pointe retirement community of Waukee recently toured area attractions and experienced state history while on the White Pole Road Tour.

Resident Bob Cooper led the day-long excursion, with stops at the Bonnie & Clyde shootout site, the All Saints Center, Jesse James historical marker and Freedom Rock, just to name a few. 

“I loved all the tours, especially seeing the Freedom Rock and admiring the beautiful artwork honoring our veterans,” said resident Walter Grothe.

The original White Pole Road was designated as the first state route in 1910 and followed the Chicago, Rockland and Pacific Railroad from Des Moines to Council Bluffs. Poles along the road were painted white, encouraging drivers and tourists to travel the “Great White Way.” The Great White Way Association was later commissioned in 1913 and will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this October.

The Village at Legacy Pointe is just ¼-mile from White Pole Road, now named Hickman Road / Highway 6.

“This was a fun experience for everyone on the tour, and trips like this are part of our life here at Legacy Point. In fact, I think some of the associates who went along had as much fun as our residents!” said Yvonne Potter, Executive Director of The Village at Legacy Point.
