9,000 Meals From Meals from the Heartland Packed in Jordan Creek Mall

Eleven teams of businesses around Des Moines raced to pack, staple and seal 9,000 meals from Meals from the Heartland to win the Hy-Vee Cup, in the center of Jordan Creek Mall, August 1.

Nine thousand packed meals later, Hy-Vee Management won the Hy-Vee Cup at the 6th annual Meals from the Heartland Hy-Vee Cup meal packing competition, August 1 in Jordan Creek Mall.

Eleven different business formed teams and competed to pack boxes meals that will go to the Food Bank of Iowa.

After the competition, Brad Waller, assistant vice president of Hy-Vee, presented a $25,000 check to Meals from the Heartland.

Chris Gray, of Principal Financial Group, said Principal does the competition every year.

"It goes to a really good cause," Gray said. "It's fun to have the competition between company to company, but I think everybody knows what a good cause it is and now that the food stays locally it's great."

Betsy Parker, from Sigler, participated in the event for the first time. Parker said last year Sigler was the champions.

"It was a great opportunity to help people," Parker said. "It was really fun and really intense."

The Meals from the Heartland Hy-Vee Cup event was the kick off to registration for the 2013 Annual Hunger Fight, an event where five million meals will be packaged, on August 28-31 at Hy-Vee Hall.
