The difference between whether or not a person may go to the gym can come down to something as small as one mile. Recent research found that the median distance from home to gym for people who go five times a week is 3.7 miles, while those who live 5.1 miles away only visit the gym once a month! This fact sparked the idea for Fitness Nomad back in 2018. When co-founder Mark Swisher learned that the difference of living only 1.4 miles further away from a gym deflated the chances of going to work out he wanted to do something to change that and remove this small but significant barrier. Having been in the fitness industry himself for 8 years at that point he had seen many times how exterior factors affected his clients’ ability to make it to the gym including weather, distance, and of course time.

Mark decided this was the perfect time to make his dream of owning his own gym a reality. He started thinking about how he would solve the location and time constraint issue that gym goers experienced, and decided that eliminating them altogether was the best option. “By bringing the gym to people (wherever they want to meet) they no longer have that mental block or barrier that makes the gym seem too far away. It also helps people find the time to make fitness the priority they want it to be. Our goal is to eliminate the barriers that exist to living a healthy lifestyle.”

Fitness Nomad has finally become a reality after two years in the making. Mark commented on the time it took to go from idea to reality. “I could have started it back in 2018, but I wanted to do it right. I wanted to offer people the best possible experience and not just a traditional in-home personal training experience which often includes a very limited amount of equipment (bands, medicine ball, a couple different dumbbells). That equipment is a good start and allows you to do some things which is better than nothing, but it’s really limiting and does not offer the full range of possibilities you would get a at gym. That’s why my wife and I took the time to find different and unique equipment, companies, and manufacturers that would allow us to be innovative and bring a full range of the top-quality equipment you’d expect to see in a gym, such as squat racks, benches, and a full range of weights and accessories. This allows us to bring our members limitless possibilities of exercises and workouts to individualize the experience and achieve their fitness and health goals.”

The gym can be an intimidating space for some and can seem constraining to others. Mark and Rachel recognize this and want all wellness enthusiasts to be able to enjoy and have fun while working out. By coming to your home or meeting at a park they hope to not only eliminate the barriers of distance and time but also the barriers some may feel from a traditional gym atmosphere by opening up the possibilities of fitness and fun by taking their members outside as well.

Beyond the goal of creating a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere, Mark and Rachel (who is a physical therapist), care about focusing workouts on client interests. As Fitness Nomad, they focus on clear goal setting as well as detailed assessments of any movement dysfunctions that can be improved for the best technique and quality outcomes for the individual. They also care about giving back to the community and plan to begin with donating their time to underserved youth. For each new membership purchased, Fitness Nomad will provide fitness or sport activities to youth organizations around the greater Des Moines area and will share these experiences on the gym’s social media accounts.

Mark and Rachel are excited for you to be a part of their mission to help people live healthier lives and reach individualized performance goals. Check them out at fitnessnomadllc.com, and reach out to them through email at fitnessnomadllc@gmail.com or phone at (515) 229-4625.
