Now What? Surprising Find Latest Cause for Delay on Grand Avenue Bridge Project

Seemingly, someone or something doesn't want the Grand Avenue Bridge project, which has closed the road since May, to get finished.

First, it was the discovery of asbestos, then unexpected debris was found in the riverbed and now an apparent arrowhead was found in the Grand Avenue Bridge construction site.

Seemingly, someone or something doesn't want the bridge project, which has closed the road since May, to get finished.

Contractors have said the major connector bridge between Des Moines and West Des Moines at the Grand Avenue and 63rd Street intersection likely won't be reopened until December, while the timeline still calls for three lanes to be reopened by Sept. 27, according to the Des Moines Register.

The latest wrinkle comes from an arrowhead or some similar archeological find that is prompting tests to the site. A city official says he doesn't expect the site to have archeological significance, but the review must pass through a couple agencies before they can resume work where the artifact was found.
