Residents Can Have Hazardous Waste Collected at Their Door

The West Des Moines pilot program costs $25 per collection; residents can sign up through the public works department.

From a City of West Des Moines news release:

West Des Moines residents may take advantage of a new pilot program for ridding their homes of hazardous waste with convenient collection right at their door.

Items that can be collected include: aerosol cans, antifreeze, oven cleaner, rust remover, cell phones, some batteries, fertilizers, weed killers, gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner and remover, motor oil and oil filters, and roofing glue.

Sign Up - $25 Per Collection 
Residents can sign up on an as-needed basis from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at West Des Moines Public Works, 516 S. 16th St. For $25 fee per use, residents receive: 
• Up to two 12-gallon bins  
• Handling instructions and list of accepted and not accepted items

Schedule Collection With Metro Waste Authority 
Once you fill your bins, call Metro Waste Authority at 515.333.4434 to 
schedule collection. Bins are collected the second Friday of each 
month.

This program is available to West Des Moines residents who are eligible for Curb It! recycling and townhome residents with private driveways. Waste must be generated from a household (not a business).

Packing Instructions

All containers must be placed upright in the bin and labeled. If the original label is missing, place a label on the container noting the contents. Leaking containers or CFLs must be placed in a sealed plastic bag.
