Weather-Related Delays Tuesday: Schools Facing 2-Hour Late Start

The continued deep freeze has delayed the return to classes in some districts following winter break.

All schools in the Urbandale and West Des Moines districts will begin two hours late Tuesday due to the cold temperature and dangerous wind chills. Morning preschool is canceled in both districts. Find additional central Iowa closings on the KCCI website.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the overnight temperature will continue to drop into the morning, falling to -19 by 6 a.m. with a wind chill of -30. The temperature will climb throughout the day with a high of 16 coming at 10 p.m., but daytime temperatures will range from 0 at 10 a.m. to 10 degrees by 1 p.m. and 13 at 7 p.m.

After a brief and slight warm up, another round of extreme cold will move into the area from Wednesday night through Friday, the weather service forecasts.

A wind chill warning remains in effect until noon Tuesday as wind chills through central Iowa range from -40 to -25.
