West Des Moines Considers Aquatic Center Rate Increase

The city's parks board says rates have not been adjusted since 2005 for residents and 2009 for non-resident users of the city facilities.

WEST DES MOINES, IA — The cost of using the aquatic centers in West Des Moines and Clive could rise next summer under proposals being considered by the cities' parks and recreation advisory board. West Des Moines board members will discuss increasing the cost of season passes from 6 percent to 22 percent at a meeting on Thursday.

West Des Moines has not raised its residents' season pass rates since 2005 and its non-resident rates since 2009. But under the proposed price increases, the season pass rates for Valley View and Holiday Park aquatic centers would increase as follows:

Resident rates:

  • One-person pass, from $80 to $85
  • Two-person pass, from $110 to $120
  • Additional person, from $35 to $45
  • Nanny/granny pass, from $50 to $60

Non-resident rates:

  • One-person pass, from $120 to $130
  • Two-person pass, from $160 to $170
  • Additional person, from $45 to $55
  • Nanny/granny pass, from $50 to $60

The board does not plan to change the daily admission fee, citing market competitiveness. That rate was last increased in 2011. The board said similar rate increases are being proposed by Clive for its aquatic center.

The facilities committee approved the increases at its last meeting on Nov. 7 to move the recommendation to the parks board, which meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 4200 Mills Civic Parkway. If passed, the rate increase will be considered by the City Council for final approval.
