Kansas Sheriff's Deputy Killed, Another Injured In Shooting

The shooting happened Friday morning as the two deputies were transporting inmates to the court services building.

KANSAS CITY, KS — A Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy was killed and another is in the hospital in critical condition after a shooting in the parking lot of the court services building in Kansas City and the deputies may have been shot with their own firearm, officials said.

The shooting happened as the two deputies were transporting inmates from the county jail to the court services building, which is across the street.

Major Kelli Bailiff, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said at a press conference that the shooting happened in the parking lot and the two deputies were "overcome."

Authorities have not released the names of the deputies and the investigation has been turned over to the Kansas City, Kansas police department.

The suspect was shot and injured in the shooting and was also taken to the hospital.
