Explore 'Tails And Tales' With The Summer Reading Program In Wichita

The Wichita Public Library’s 2021 Summer Reading Program, “Tails and Tales,” will begin June 1 and run through July 29. This annual program for youth enrolls more than 10,000 kids and teens who commit to reading during the summer months.

Designed to combat the “Summer Slide,” where children and teens experience a learning loss over the summer break from school, the Summer Reading Program keeps young minds active through reading and educational activities throughout the summer.

The Summer Reading Program is designed for three age levels: Baby Bookworms for ages 0-2, Kids Read for ages 3-11 and Teens Read ages 12-18.

Children and teens who enroll in the program will receive a Summer Reading Guide or summer reading log sheet for which they will be rewarded prizes at different completion levels. Baby Bookworm participants will receive an early activities log for which they can complete 15 of the activities to earn prizes. Prize sponsors include: Carlos O’Kelly’s, Fazoli’s, Texas Roadhouse, Seneca Bowl, Spangles, Chick-fil-a, Friends of the Library, Exploration Place and Wichita River Festival.

Along with reading and learning components, the Library is planning both in-person and virtual programs, including:

• Pre-recorded virtual story times and special guest programs, available through the Library’s Vimeo account
• Concert series at Naftzger and Clapp Parks, including a return performance from Emmy-nominated Sugar Free All Stars, last seen at the Library in November 2019
• Creative outdoor events at branch libraries
