WICHITA, KS — A Sedgwick County deputy was shot and killed Sunday, according to police. The Harper Police Department announced Sunday afternoon that a second officer at the scene found the deputy and the suspect down and not breathing. Both had been shot. The deputy had been responding to a report of a suspicious person.

The deputy, who was not immediately identified, was declared dead within minutes. The suspect was "code black," the police department said. This means the suspect, who also was not identified, had gone into cardiopulmonary arrest.

Lt. Tim Myers of the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office told the Wichita Eagle the office is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The shooting happened around 2 p.m. near North 295th Street West and West 21st Street North, about 20 miles north of Wichita.
