Kentucky Derby 2018: Race Post Time, Horses, Odds, TV Schedule

LOUISVILLE, KY — The post time for the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 5, is 6:50 p.m. But NBC Sports, which will televise and live stream the race, will begin its broadcast hours earlier at Churchill Downs.

A $2 million purse is guaranteed in the 1 1/4-mile race, the first in the Triple Crown series of thoroughbred racing.

Others in the series are the Preakness Stakes on May 19 in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Belmont Stakes on June 9 in Elmont, New York. The last time a horse won the Triple Crown was in 2015, when American Pharoah won the coveted prize.

Early favorites this round are Justify, a California horse trained by Bob Baffert that won this year’s Santa Anita Derby; Mendelssohn, a $3 million colt from Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien that won the Breeders’ Cup and the UAE Derby in Dubai; and the 3-year-old colt Magnum Moon a Todd A. Pletcher-trained horse.
