Lafayette Shooting: Police Officer Killed In Shootout Identified, 2 Others Hurt

The officer was responding to a report around 10 p.m. Sunday that someone had a gun at a Big Boy store.

LAFAYETTE, LA — A nine-year Lafayette police patrol veteran was killed in a shootout after responding to a call about a shooting at a Big Boy convenience store, and leaves behind a wife, two stepdaughters and a 3-year-old daughter, police said.

Lafayette police Monday identified the officer as Cpl. Michael Paul Middlebrook. He was killed late Sunday after responding to a call about a shooting at a Big Boy convenience store, state police said.

The suspect started a shootout and tried to flee, but was quickly apprehended by police officers, Master Trooper Brooks David said. Two other people were also shot, but are expected to survive, he said. Investigators have not released the suspect's name.
