Person Who Took In Injured Raccoon Bitten, Needs Rabies Shots

The injured raccoon a Maine resident tried to help tested positive for rabies.

KENNENBUNKPORT, ME — A Maine resident who took in an injured raccoon ended up being bitten by the rabid animal several times, according to Kennenbunkport police.

Police said it was 2018's first confirmed case of rabies in Kennenbunkport.

A game warden who responded to the scene to try and remove the animal was also bitten by the raccoon, police said.

Police warned residents to never take in a wild animal.

"The Maine Warden service is the agency that should be contacted for wild animals that are injured or become a nuisance," police said. "Never touch a wild animal. It is unsafe for you and could cause the animal to become aggressive."
