Skowhegan Crash Kills Pregnant Woman; Baby Delivered At Hospital

BREAKING: The 27-year-old woman was heading to the hospital to be medically induced to have the baby when her SUV slid on ice and rolled.

SKOWHEGAN, ME — A 27-year-old pregnant woman who was on her way to a hospital to deliver her baby died in a car crash in Skowhegan, and the baby was delivered by emergency Caesarean section, police said. Desiree Strout was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer around 7 a.m. Monday on U.S. Route 2 when the SUV began sliding on black ice.

She lost control of the SUV near the intersection of East Ridge Road, Eaton Mountain Road and U.S. Route 2. The vehicle slid into a snow bank sideways and rolled, landing on the driver’s side, police tell Patch.

Harry Weeks, 29, and an 8-year-old girl who were inside the SUV were hospitalized. Weeks was critically hurt and was being treated for a lacerated liver and a punctured lung, police tell Patch. The child was being treated for minor injuries and is expected to survive.

The baby was delivered at Redington Fairview General Hospital and remains in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center, police say.

Police say both Strout and Weeks, 29, were from Canaan.
