Drunk Augusta Man Hit Tree, Fled Scene: Police

Augusta police arrested Shane Cater on a host of charges Saturday.

AUGUSTA, ME — An Augusta man was arrested Saturday on charges he drove into a tree while drunk then fled the scene. Shane Cater, 23, was charged with a host of crimes. Police said the incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on Bolton Hill Road.

Cater crashed his black 2014 Dodge Journey at about 12:25 a.m. near Route 3.

"Upon arrival, Officers located a single motor vehicle which had struck a tree," Augusta police Sergeant Christian Behr said in a statement. "There was no one around the scene and it was unclear if there were any injuries. The motor vehicle ... had extensive front end damage and there were several air bags deployed."

"(Augusta police) would like to remind everyone not to drink and drive and to 'arrive alive,'" Behr said in a statement.
