Hurricane Hermine Tracking 'Well South' of Maine

Hurricane Hermine, expected to cause deadly flooding in south Atlantic states, will reach southern New England this weekend.

AUGUSTA, ME — Hurricane Hermine, which churned up 75 mph winds as it tracked toward Florida Thursday afternoon, will reach New England this weekend but have little effect on Maine. The hurricane — the first to make landfall on Florida since Hurricane Wilma in 2005 — will hit the Sunshine State Thursday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hermine will reach the the Massachusetts coast sometime Sunday night, likely bringing rain and rough surf. Coastal York County could receive some associated rain early Monday. The current track shows the storm "well south" of Maine, forecasters said.

Hermine is expected to make landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida Thursday night before rolling over Atlanta, South Carolina, and North Carolina as it pushes out to sea. Deadly flooding is possible in those states, forecasters warned.
