Tropical Storm Hermine: Rip Currents Expected in Southern Maine
Tropical Storm Hermine is expected to churn up dangerous rip currents in southern Maine on Labor Day.
YORK, MAINE — Tropical Storm Hermine, which was responsible for at least one death in Florida Friday, will batter the southern New England coast Sunday, likely churning up rip currents in southern York County, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service issued a tropical storm watch for Cape Cod Sunday night through Monday. Hermine is expected to stall off Cape Cod through Wednesday as it sputters out.
The storm will cause steady rain Monday and Tuesday before things clear up Wednesday. It will also create dangerous rip currents through next week, NWS said. Rip currents are thin channels near the shore that pull swimmers out to sea. Swimmers can escape by swimming sideways.
