Mayday Called At Aberdeen House Fire: Officials

A firefighter fell through the floor responding to a house fire in Aberdeen Monday morning, officials said.

ABERDEEN, MD — A firefighter sustained minor injuries from falling through the floor at a house fire in Aberdeen early Monday morning, officials reported. Six pets perished in the blaze, which caused $350,000 in damage, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, according to Jenn Chenworth, spokeswoman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

Crews were called to the 1300 block of North Stepney Road at 2:49 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, she said. A driver passing by reported the fire.

When the Aberdeen Fire Department arrived, Chenworth said fire was visible.

By 3:34 a.m., Aberdeen crews and those from surrounding areas had brought the house fire under control.

"As firefighters were clearing the [residence] and checking for possible occupants, MAYDAY was called for one firefighter that fell through the floor at 4:27 a.m.," Chenworth said.

By 4:29 a.m., she said the firefighter had been rescued; and receiving treatment at the scene for minor injuries, the first responder was released.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 7:38 a.m., according to Chenworth.

Five adults were displaced as a result of the fire, which is under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The Red Cross is assisting the residents.

Investigators determined the fire started inside the home but it is unclear where and how, officials reported Monday morning.

Three dogs, two cats and one guinea pig died in the fire, according to authorities.

Officials estimated there was $275,000 in structural damage to the one-story rancher, while $75,000 worth of items inside were also lost.
