Reading Camp Maryland Harford County Knows
A child who reads will be an adult who thinks.
Author unknown
Reading Camp is an all-volunteer group providing a secular ministry to elementary school aged children who are struggling with reading, which is the foundation of all learning. Using a summer day camp model, our goals are to:
• Strengthen basic reading skills
• Build self-confidence
• Stem summer learning loss
• Develop a love of reading and learning.
A Day at Camp
The camp day begins with breakfast after which campers work in small groups on basic skills – phonics, strategies, comprehension, sight words- plus a writing component and a time for free reading. After lunch campers participate in traditional camp activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, and games. Throughout the day, there is an emphasis on cooperation, respect, and good sportsmanship.

YOU CAN HELP
• We are always looking for volunteers. We need teachers, aides, teen counselors, cooks, custodians, administrative help, craft and games planners.
• Come teach a craft or share a special skill.
• Collect school supplies and books. We need books, reading levels Grades 1-4.
• Donate money. We are a tuition -free program that relies totally on grants and donations from individuals who value reading and grants when we are awarded them.
• Volunteer to be a guest reader, not only at Reading Camp, but are local schools.
• Support your local libraries. Reading Camp is indebted to our libraries for opening their doors to help us by lending books giving tours and allowing us to use their facilities to teach students.
• Support local food pantries and nutrition programs in the community. Hungry children cannot learn well.
• Speak up for the children. They are our future and our most precious resource in making the world a better place.
